Introduction to RoHS testing
The European Union officially announced the 2002/95/EC Directive on 27th January, 2003, the "Directive on the Prohibition of Certain Hazardous Substances in Electrical and Electronic Equipment" (referred to as the RoHS Directive), which took effect on 1st July, 2006 . The directive requires that eight categories of electronic and electrical products sold in the EU market must undergo RoHS testing and must not contain six hazardous substances such as lead, mercury, cadmium, hexavalent chromium, polybrominated biphenyls and polybrominated diphenyl ethers.

ROSH Environmental Certification-Management Measures for the Control of Pollution by Electronic Information Products-The "Administrative Measures" implemented on 1st March, 2007 require companies to affix their labels in accordance with the requirements of SJ/T 11364-2006.

Core content of "Administrative Measures":
Producers should gradually reduce and eliminate the content of lead, mercury, cadmium, hexavalent chromium, polymeric brominated biphenyl (PBB), polymeric brominated biphenyl (PBDE) and other toxic and hazardous substances in products; for those that cannot be completely eliminated, The content of toxic and hazardous substances shall not exceed the relevant provisions of the standard.


The detection methods of 6 hazardous substances in RoHS:


“Testing Methods for Toxic and Harmful Substances in Electronic Information Products" (hereinafter referred to as "Testing Methods", the standard number is SJ/T 11365-2006) limits the testing methods for harmful elements in the RoHS requirements. Among them, X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy (XRF) has been established as a quick screening method as the fastest and most convenient method. X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy (XRF) can be used to accurately test the corresponding standard samples of the five elements of lead (Pb), mercury (Hg), cadmium (Cd), chromium (Cr), and bromine (Br).

Common Test Methods for RoHS Test Equipment

RoHS is a mandatory standard established by EU legislation. Its full name is "Restriction of Hazardous Substances" (Restriction of Hazardous Substances). This standard has been formally implemented since July 1, 2006 which is mainly used to regulate the materials and process standards of electrical and electronic products. The ROHS directive is divided into RoHS1.0 and RoHS2.0, and the substances required to be tested are different, and the test methods are also different.

The current IEC standard is PY/TD-GC-MS (thermal cracking/ Thermal desorption-gas chromatography-mass spectrometry detector), where the thermal cracking temperature is high, up to 1200 degrees, many large molecular substances are cracked into small molecular substances, which will Interference and false positives to the results, so need to use MS mass spectrometers to qualify.

Introduction to RoHS Restriction of Hazardous Substances

RoHS Background:

The European Union Conference and the Council of the European Union formally announced the document 2002/95/EC in February, 2003: It is required that electrical and electronic products entering the European Union from 1st July, 2006 should comply with the Restriction of Hazardous Substances Directive (Restriction of Hazardous Substances). , Referred to as RoHS). This directive mainly restricts the content of lead Pb, mercury Hg, cadmium Cd, hexavalent chromium Cr6+, polybrominated biphenyls PBB, and polybrominated diphenyl ethers PBDE in products. Many electrical and electronic products contain these six toxic and hazardous substances at present.

RoHS 2.0 Revision Directive:
The European Union Official Journal (OJ) issued the RoHS 2.0 Amendment Directive (EU) 2015/863, which officially included DEHP, BBP, DBP, and DIBP in the Appendix II restricted substances list. Up to now, Appendix II has ten mandatory controls. It substances effective time medical equipment and monitoring equipment until 22nd July, 2021, and other electronic and electrical products 22nd July, 2019.
On January 6, 2016, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, the National Development and Reform Commission and other eight ministries and commissions jointly issued the "Administrative Measures for the Restriction of the Use of Hazardous Substances in Electrical and Electronic Products". It is proposed to establish a conformity assessment system for the restriction of the use of hazardous substances in electrical and electronic products. It officially launched on 1st, July, 2016.

Testing Content and Application Fields of RoHS Test Equipment

 RoHS is a mandatory standard established by EU legislation. Its full name is "Restriction of Hazardous Substances" (Restriction of Hazardous Substances). Introduction of RoHS tester related standards

The European Union (EU) announce <The Restriction of the use of certain Hazardous Substances in Electrical and Electronic Equipment> in January 2003, abbreviated as RoHS Directive. It is required that from July 1, 2006, it is prohibited to sell electronic and electrical products containing six harmful substances of Pb, Hg, Cd, CrVI, PBBs, PBDEs in the EU market.

In August 2005, the EU promulgated the 2005/618/EC Directive, clearly defining the maximum limit values of 6 major hazardous substances in homogeneous materials:

On July 1, 2011, 2011/65/EU (RoHS 2.0) was published in the Official Journal of the EU. The latest revised directive came into effect on July 21, 2011, and the EU requires member states to convert the new directive into domestic laws, and it will be implemented from January 2, 2013. The original directive 2002/95/EC shall be repealed on January 3, 2013. Main revised content of RoHS 2.0 is as below:

1. Scope adjustment and revision of some definitions of controlled products
Extend the scope of controlled products to all electrical and electronic equipment except for special exemptions. Including those exempted by 2002/95/EC: category 8 medical equipment, category 9 product monitoring equipment, and category 11 all other electrical and electronic equipment not covered by categories 1~10, including cables and other components part.
2. Revision of the Restricted Substance List
Although no new restricted substances have been added, four toxic and hazardous substances (DIBP, DEHP, DBP and BBP) have been selected as candidates for restricted substances.
3. Provisions for the transition period
In order to allow manufacturers newly incorporated into RoHS 2.0 controlled products to have sufficient time to comply with the directive requirements, ROHS 2.0 has set a transition period for related products.
4. Revision of the exemption mechanism
The existing exemption clauses were adopted and 20 new exemptions were proposed for medical and monitoring equipment, and different exemption validity periods were stipulated for product categories.
5.Introduce the CE mark to strengthen workplace supervision
Incorporate the ROHS compliance of electrical and electronic equipment into the CE marking requirements. When posting the CE mark, the producer should ensure that the product complies with the ROHS directive and prepare the corresponding declaration and technical documents.
